There's a popular version of the AI story that goes like this: AI will do the hard parts so you don't have to. Learn less. Skim more. Let the machine fill in the gaps.
The actual dynamic runs in the opposite direction. AI, used well, pushes you to go deeper than you ever would have on your own. It rewards depth and punishes shallowness with a precision that the pre-AI world never would have.
How Good is the Question?
Every interaction with an AI model starts with a question, and the distance between a good question and a bad one is almost entirely a function of how much the person already knows.
A supply chain director with fifteen years of experience will ask an AI to model the second-order effects of moving a distribution center from Memphis to Louisville. She'll specify carrier rate structures, seasonal volume patterns, and downstream impacts on regional fulfillment SLAs. A new hire who just finished an online course will ask "how do I optimize my supply chain?" One of those people gets something genuinely useful back. The other gets a Wikipedia summary dressed up in confident prose.
This isn't a flaw in the technology. It's a feature of how knowledge works. You can't ask about what you don't know exists. The more you know, the more specific and load-bearing your questions become, and the more useful the output. AI creates a feedback loop that accelerates in direct proportion to the depth you bring into the conversation.
The Verification Gap
AI models produce output that sounds authoritative regardless of whether it's correct. The sentence structure is clean. The reasoning appears sound. The confidence never wavers. And if you don't already have enough context to evaluate the output, you will accept things that are subtly — or catastrophically — wrong.
Better models won't fix this. As models improve, they get better at being right, but they also get better at sounding right when they aren't. The frontier of plausible-but-incorrect output moves forward with every generation. The only reliable check is a person who understands the domain well enough to push back.
Someone who decided they could stop learning because AI had it covered has given up the one capability that makes AI safe to use in the first place.
What Depth Gets You
The flip side of this dynamic is where it gets interesting. When you bring real expertise to an AI interaction, the nature of the exchange changes. You stop receiving answers and start pressure-testing ideas at a speed that wasn't previously available. You explore adjacent territory from a position of strength, where you know enough to evaluate what you find. You spend less time on mechanical work and more time in the layer where complex judgment actually matters.
Consider a tax attorney who understands the code at a deep structural level. They can use AI to explore the implications of a proposed regulatory change across dozens of client scenarios in a single afternoon. Without AI, that same afternoon covers two or three. Their knowledge didn't become less valuable. It was the bottleneck that, once cleared, opened up a new frontier of possibility.
The Classical Learning Parallel
We homeschooled our kids using a classical education model built on a progression called the trivium: grammar, logic, rhetoric. In the grammar stage, students memorize facts, build vocabulary, and absorb the raw material of a subject. The logic stage teaches analysis, the ability to see relationships and evaluate whether an argument actually holds together. Rhetoric is synthesis and creation, producing original work that's grounded in what came before.
The design principle that holds the whole thing together is sequential dependence. You cannot skip stages. A student who never internalized multiplication tables will struggle with algebra, not for lack of intelligence but for lack of the automaticity that frees up cognitive capacity for higher-order work. Skip logic, and you produce rhetoric that sounds polished but collapses the moment someone asks a hard question.
AI adoption is repeating this mistake at industrial scale. Organizations are jumping straight to rhetoric — AI-generated deliverables — without grammar (deep domain knowledge) or logic (the analytical skill to evaluate what the AI produces). The output looks professional. The people producing it have no way to know whether it actually is, because they skipped the stages that would have given them that ability.
In Business, Context Wins
In the professional world, this argument has a concrete punchline: deep context is what gets rewarded.
I'm talking about the kind of context that comes from years inside a problem space, where you've built pattern recognition from direct experience. Where you know not just what the data says but why it says it. Where you understand the difference between what an org chart describes and how decisions actually flow.
That context is illegible to AI. It was never written down. It doesn't exist in any training set. It lives in the person who accumulated it through years of paying attention.
AI compresses the value of surface-level knowledge toward zero. If your value proposition is "I know a little about a lot of things," you're now competing directly with a tool that does the same thing cheaper and faster. Deep context, on the other hand, appreciates as AI improves. The spread between shallow and deep is widening, and it will keep widening.
Organizations that treat AI as a reason to stop investing in depth are hollowing out the one asset that gives them durable advantage. The ones that use it to push further into what they already know well are the ones that will pull away.
On Building, Knowledge, and Holograms
As the CEO of a software engineering firm, I've spent years telling potential clients "we can build anything." And with very few exceptions, that's true. But the capability to build is never the constraint. The problem statement is always the same: what difficult problem are we solving for? Answering that question well requires partnering with a true subject matter expert — someone who has tried and failed inside a domain, who has gutted it out long enough to reach a place of real experiential value. Technology is the easy part. The depth is the hard part. It always was.
I get asked about this constantly. College students, young professionals early in their careers, people trying to figure out what AI means for their futures. The question is often some version of "should I even bother learning X if AI can do it for me?"
My answer is always the same: go deeper. Pick a vertical. Become the person who knows more about that domain than anyone in the room. With or without AI, the market rewards expertise. It always has. What's changed is that AI has made the gap between the expert and the generalist wider and more visible than ever. The generalist's work can be approximated by a prompt. The expert's cannot.
That's not a threat. That's a career strategy.
